Stanley Hughes
January 22, 2012 (PM)
Ephesians 1: 12-14;30
Christians are sealed by the Holy Spirit after being saved. This seal is a sign of God's ownership of the person, security of salvation, and guaranty of heaven, among other things. This study examines the experience of being sealed, the explanation of being sealed, and the evidences of being sealed.
Pilate and Political Expediency
Stanley Hughes
January 15, 2012 (AM)
John 18:28-33
Pilate's questioning of Jesus seems to indicate that he was looking for a way to release Jesus. Why then did Pilate hand Jesus over to be crucified? In this case political expediency lined up with Biblical prophecy. All was by God's design, including the death of Jesus. For us as Christians, the events of our lives are all by God's design also. All things come to us not by chance but from our Father's hand.
Jesus' Trial Before Pilate
Stanley Hughes
January 8, 2012 (AM)
John 18:28-33
The trial before Pilate was one in a series of trials that Jesus underwent. Today we examine the involvement of the religious leaders who brought Jesus to Pilate. Have you ever wondered why they did this? Why didn't they just kill Jesus themselves, as they did when they stoned Stephen?
Examining Ourselves
Stanley Hughes
January 8, 2012 (PM)
I Cor. 11:26-29; Psalm 15
Preparing for the Lord's Supper and preparing for upcoming revival services call for similar actions by us. Some of the characteristics we should find in ourselves include a righteous walk, speech that reflects holiness, doing no wrong to our neighbor, having God's standards and values as ours, keeping God's Word even when it hurts, and honoring God in our finances.
Storms by Design
Stanley Hughes
January 1, 2012 (AM)
Matthew 14: 22-33
The disciples encountered a fierce storm when they were alone in a boat. This was a "storm by God's design" to help them realize their need for greater faith. For us too there are storms, both physical and spiritual, and we can learn much from the disciples' encounter with the storm and Jesus' coming to them during it. Such storms are for the glory of God and our ultimate good.

Learn about the wise men, the "not-so-wise" men, and then see into which group you fit.
A Perspective on Prayer
Stanley Hughes
December 18, 2011 (AM)
Jeremiah 33:3
"Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." (Jer. 33:3) God spoke this to Jeremiah while he was being held prisoner by his own rulers. In these words we see the following lessons: the privilege of praying, one purpose for praying, and a perspective gained from praying.
The Importance of the Bible in Everyday Life
Stanley Hughes
December 11, 2011 (AM)
Joshua 1:1-9
Is the Bible important in your life? Important enough to read daily? When Joshua took over after Moses died, God gave him the charge to be strong and courageous. The book of the law passed on by Moses was to be Joshua's daily guide. The Bible should be our guide also. The upcoming new year gives a fresh opportunity to commit to reading, knowing, believing, and obeying the Bible on a daily basis.
Jesus' Trial Before Caiaphas
Stanley Hughes
December 4, 2011 (AM)
John 18: 24,28
The trial before Caiaphas, the high priest, was a continuation of trials that totaled six in the short period before Jesus was crucified. Interestingly, the account of this trial in John's gospel is the shortest account of any gospel, in spite of John's apparent presence at the trial. What motivated the trial? Perhaps it was jealousy, job security, countering Jesus' claim as Son of God, or anger from previous conflicts with Jesus. In any event, several illegalities at the trial are evident upon close examination.
Abraham: The Marks of a Missionary
Stanley Hughes
November 27, 2011 (AM)
Genesis 12:1-5
Perhaps you have never thought of Abraham as a missionary. However, the word missionary means "sent one," and Abraham was clearly sent by God from his homeland to another country. In responding to God's sending, Abraham exemplified four distinct marks of missionaries. These marks are believing God, following His calling, persevering in spite of failure, and making a difference.

Thanksgiving
Stanley Hughes
November 20, 2011 (PM)
Luke 17:11-19
Giving thanks should be the primary response of people to the grace of God. However, when Jesus healed ten men of leprosy, only one of them (a Samaritan) returned to give thanks. Are we in the group of the nine who never returned, or we with the Samaritan who came back to give thanks? "Give thanks in everything, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." (I Thessalonians 5:18)
The Trial that Never Happened
Stanley Hughes
November 13, 2011 (AM)
John 18:19-24
The trial of Jesus before the religious leaders "never happened" in the sense that no defense witnesses were called. Imagine the potential testimonies of people who encountered Jesus and were never the same: a Pharisee, a Samaritan woman, a healed blind man, a man raised from the dead, and a disciple who was overwhelmed. In addition, imagine the Old Testament prophets whose writings about the Messiah were fulfilled.
The Promise of Eternal Inheritance
Stanley Hughes
November 13, 2011 (PM)
Ephesians 1:11
Do you expect to receive an inheritance? If you are a Christian, you have a rich inheritance in heaven that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich." (2 Corinthians 8:8-10)
